West Side Story es uno de los grandes musicales de Broadway, representado más de 700 veces (todo un récord para la época) y es una adaptación del Romeo y Julieta de Shakespeare que todos conocemos, pero trasladado al Manhattan de los años 50.
Dirigido por Jerome Robbins, la historia nos habla de dos bandas: los Jets formados por estadounidenses nacidos de emigrantes (italianos, suecos, etc), y los Sharks puertoriqueños que han decidido vivir en Estados Unidos. A lo largo del musical se puede observar la gran rivalidad que hay entre las dos bandas que se agrava cuando nuestro protagonista masculino y mejor amigo de Riff (líder de los Jets), Tony, se enamora de María, la hermana pequeña de Bernardo (líder de los Sharks).

West Side Story is one of the biggest musicales of Broadway, played more than 700 times (a record if you think of the age) and is and adaptation of the classic Romeo and Juliet from Shakespeare that we all know, but moved to the Manhattan of the fifties.
Directed by Jerome Robbins, the story talks us about two gangs: the Jets, americans who are child of emigrants (italians, swedish, etc), and the Sharks, Porto Rican who decided to live in US. Throughout the musical it's very clear the rivalry between the two gangs but it gets worse when our male protagonist and Riff's best friend (Jets's lider), Tony, falls in love with María, Bernardo's little sister (Sharks's lider).


Este dramático musical empezó en Nueva York en el 1957 y con sus conocidas canciones escritas por Stephen Sondheim, la música de Leonard Bernstein, sus bailes callejeros y el tema de los problemas sociales, marcó fuerte en el teatro musical estadounidense. Fue nominada a varios premios Tony, dónde recibió a la mejor coreografía.
No tardó en aparecer en la gran pantalla pues en el 1961 Jerome Robbins junto a Robert Wise la producieron. Con actores y actrices como Natalie Wood (María), Richard Beymer (Tony), George Chakiris (Bernardo), Rita Moreno (Anita) o Russ Tamblyn (Riff), la película fue un éxito.
Recibieron 10 Oscars en el 1962, entre ellos al mejor vestuario, mejor montaje, mejor música, y también podemos ver a Rita Moreno y George Chakiris como mejores actriz y actor de reparto, muy merecidos.

This dramatic musical began in New York in 1957 with its well-known songs written by Stephen Sondheim and music by Leonard Bernsten, its street dances and its social problems themed plot were the main cause of its success on the stage. The play was also nominated to several Tony awards and won one to the best choreography.
It didn't took long to appear in the big screen, in 1961 Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise were the ones to produce it. They counted on with a crew of actors such as Natalie Wood (María), Richard Beymer (Tony), George Chakiris (Bernardo), Rita Moreno (Anita) and Russ Tamblyn (Riff). The movie was a huge success and recieved ten Oscars in 1962, some amongst them: best costume design, best film editing, best music and also Rita Moreno and George Chakiris recieved best suporting actress and actor.


Tras un poquito de historia e información sobre el musical en sí, vamos a hablar sobre el nail art, ¿no?. Para empezar os diré que he usado este precioso esmalte rojo como base para toda la manicura, es de una nueva colección de Deborah Milano y se llaman On-the-GO gel effect. Este concretamente es el tono 09 Red, un rojo clásico precioso. ¡Pero os hablaré con más detalle de ellos la próxima semana!

After a little bit of story and information of the musical, let's talk about the nail art, don't you think? To star with I will tell you that I used this beautiful red polish as a base for the mani, it's from a new collection from Deborah Milano called On-the-GO gel effect. This one is the number 09 Red and it's gorgeous. But I'm gonna tell you more about this collection next week!


Encima de esa preciosa base decidí plasmar una parte de la portada con acrílicos negro y blanco, el chico y la chica bailando en las escaleras de incendios que veis en la uña del dedo corazón. Podéis ver la clara referencia del póster de Saul Bass dando un clic aquí, donde también veréis porqué escogí solo estos tres colores para este nail art ;). En el resto de uñas decidí improvisar, quise representar las dos bandas con esa pared de ladrillos con los "grafittis" y también la silueta de la ciudad para dar cierta continuidad.
En general el resultado me gustó un montón y además representa tres puntos básicos del musical: la ciudad, las bandas y la historia de amor. Y a vosotros, ¿qué os ha parecido? Over the beautiful red base I chose to paint a part of the cover with black and white acrylic paint: the boy and the girl dancing over a fire staircase that you can see on the middle finger. You can watch my inspiration by Saul Bass's poster by clicking here, where you will observe why I chose to stick with this three colours for the nail art ;). On the rest of nails I had to improvise a little and represented the two gangs with a brick wall and two grafitti, and also the silhouette of the city.
I am very satisfied with the final result, and in my opinion on the nail art you can see three main points of the musical: the city, the gangs and the love story. Tell me, what do you think about it?
